How To: Stop Your iPhone's Screen from Randomly Turning On in iOS 10

After updating your iPhone to iOS 10, you may have noticed that your screen will wake up whenever you pick up the device to look at it, or even when it's just in your pocket or dangling in your hand. This is because of a new "feature" called Raise to Wake. It doesn't unlock your lock screen, just wakes it so you can see the date and time quickly, which is pretty damn useful if you're not into wearing watches around your wrist. It also gives even quicker access to the widgets screen and camera shortcut. However, it's not all sunshine and roses.Don't Miss:The 10 Most Annoying Things About iOS 10 for iPhoneIf you already have a time-teller around your wrist, and don't really use widgets, this action can be fairly annoying and unnecessary. Plus, it can come on when you don't want it to. Just imagine the disgruntled patrons next to you in a movie theater when you accidentally light up your seat.Additionally, if you happen to have a small child who likes to play around with your iPhone, it makes it easier for them to take photos or access the passcode screen. If they button smash enough, they could potentially lock you out of your iPhone—or possibly even wipe it if you have "Erase Data" enabled in Touch ID & Passcode. This feature is only available on the iPhone 6s, SE, and 7 models, and while it's on by default, is super easy to disable. Just navigate to Settings -> Display & Brightness, then toggle "Raise to Wake" off. If you'd like to try it out again one day, just go back in and toggle it on. How To: Root the Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X on Windows, Mac, or LinuxThe Foolproof Guide

How To: Root the Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X on Windows, Mac, or LinuxThe Foolproof Guide
This year, Google released two Nexus phones to glowing reviews, and as we've grown to expect, the Android community wasted no time in coming up with a root method for both. In fact, legendary root developer Chainfire even devised an entirely new "systemless" method for rooting that should make updating a bit less complicated, along with a few other benefits.Don't Miss: All the Android Terminology You Need to Know The new method roots your device without modifying Android's system partition at all—hence the systemless root moniker. This means that fewer of Android's built-in security measures need to be bypassed in order to gain root access, and in turn, early reports even indicate that Android Pay works with this new method.Provided you have a PC, Mac, or Linux machine, rooting your shiny new toy is a relatively simple process. There are quite a few steps involved, though, but I'll go over each of them in as much detail as possible to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.
Before You BeginRooting an Android 6.0 Marshmallow device requires that you install a modified boot image, which means you'll need to unlock your device's bootloader. The process of unlocking your bootloader will wipe all data on your phone, so make sure you have any important files backed up on an separate storage device.Additionally, you'll need to connect your phone to your computer to run a few commands. Considering that the Nexus 5X and 6P are among the first devices to ship with a USB type C connector, and most computers still use a USB type A connector, this means that you will likely need a USB-C to USB-A cable. For a list of these types of cables that fully comply with the new USB-C standard, head to this link.

Step 1: Install the Android SDK on Your ComputerTo begin, you'll need to grab a copy of the latest Android SDK. From your computer, head to the official site to download the file for your particular operating system. The installation process will vary depending on your operating system. Windows users can simply launch the EXE file and follow the provided instructions to install the full Android SDK, which will be saved in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\ folder. Linux and Mac users will have to extract the contents of the ZIP to a folder that can be accessed easily. Take note of this folder's location, as you will need to copy some files here later. From here, if you're using a Linux or Mac machine, open a terminal window and change directories to the /android-sdk-linux/tools/ or /android-sdk-macosx/tools/ folder that you just extracted. Next up, type android sdk (Linux) or ./android sdk (Mac) to launch the SDK Manager. After that, you'll need to download the Platform Tools package if you're using a Linux or Mac computer. Select the "Android SDK Platform-tools" option, then click the install button to take care of that.
Step 2: Install the ADB & Fastboot Drivers on Your ComputerNext up, for your computer to be able to fully interact with your Nexus, you'll have to make sure you have the ADB and Fastboot drivers installed on your system.Windows Users:If you own a Windows PC, you can download the drivers at this link. Just run the file, then follow the prompts, and you'll be good to go.Linux Users:If you're a Linux user, download and extract this ZIP file, then run the script with Terminal.Mac Users:For Mac users, the process of installing the proper drivers is a bit more involved. Please see our guide on the topic for more information.

Step 3: Download the Neccesary FilesIt's very important that you download the proper root files for your device and Android version. To make sure you're using the right files, open your phone's Settings menu, then scroll down and select "About phone." From here, make a note of the Build number listed at the bottom of the screen. Next, if you're using a Nexus 5X, download the following files to your computer, making sure that the build number shown here matches the one on your phone:Nexus 5X modified boot image (build numbers MDB08I, MDB08L, & MDB08M) TWRP recovery v2.8.7.2 for Nexus 5X (any build number) If you're rooting a Nexus 6P, download the following files instead—but again, make sure the build numbers match up:Nexus 6P modified boot image (build numbers MDB08K, MDB08L, & MDB08M) TWRP recovery v2.8.7.2 for Nexus 6P (any build number) Then, regardless of your phone model or build number, download the SuperSU ZIP and transfer the file over to your phone:SuperSU v2.56 ("systemless" version)

Step 4: Enable OEM Unlocking on Your PhoneFrom here, you'll need to enable Android's hidden "Developer options" menu so that you can then turn on a single option. Check out our full guide to see how to unlock it, if it's not already. In the "Developer options" menu, tap the "OEM unlocking" entry to enable it, then press "OK" when prompted to verify your choice.

Step 5: Put Your Phone into Bootloader ModeFrom here, you'll need to put your phone into bootloader mode. Start by powering your device completely off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously. Within a few seconds, you'll see Android's bootloader menu (depicted below). From here, connect your phone to your computer using a USB data cable.

Step 6: Unlock the BootloaderWith the prep work out of the way, you're ready to get down to business. To begin, open a command prompt window, then change directories until you arrive at the /android-sdk/platform-tools/ folder. Windows users can simply open the C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\ folder, then hold down the shift button and right click any empty space, and choose "Open command window here." Next, type in the following command and press enter:fastboot devices If this returns a series of letters and numbers, that means your device is connected properly and you're good to go. If it does not return any characters, there's a problem with your drivers, so revisit Step 2 or see our full troubleshooting guide here. Now you're ready to unlock your device's bootloader, which will allow you to flash images manually. So enter the following command to begin:fastboot flashing unlock At this point, you'll see a menu on your phone asking if you'd like to unlock your bootloader. Use the volume keys to highlight "Yes" on this menu, then press the power button on your phone to confirm your choice. Once you've done that, your phone will automatically wipe all of its data, then reboot into bootloader mode again. When you're done here, leave your phone in bootloader mode and keep the command prompt window open, since we'll be using both again later.

Step 7: Move the Boot Image & TWRP to the Platform-Tools FolderNext, copy the boot.img and twrp.img files that you downloaded in Step 3, then paste them into the /android-sdk/platform-tools folder on your computer. Again, the exact location of this directory will vary depending on your operating system, but Windows users can find it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools. Note that you may have to provide administrator credentials to paste the files into this folder.

Step 8: Flash the Modfied Boot Image & TWRPNext, switch over to the command prompt window that you opened in Step 6. From here, type in the following commands, pressing enter after each and waiting 30 seconds between commands:fastboot flash boot boot.img fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Step 9: Make TWRP Your Permanent RecoveryNext, press your phone's volume down button twice to highlight the "Recovery mode" option on the bootloader menu, then press the power button to select it. From here, your device should boot directly into TWRP. At this point, you'll see a menu asking to make TWRP your permanent recovery, so swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to do just that.

Step 10: Flash the SuperSU ZIP to RootWhen that process is finished, you'll be taken to TWRP's main menu. Tap the "Install" button here and use the file browser to select the SuperSU-2.56.zip file that you downloaded in Step 3, then swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to flash the file. When that's finished, tap the "Reboot System" button in the bottom-right corner. At this point, TWRP will say that "Your device does not appear to be rooted." This is because TWRP hasn't been updated to detect the new "Systemless" version of SuperSU, so ignore this message and tap the "Do not install" button.

Step 11: Verify RootWhen you get back up, your device should be fully rooted. To verify this, download an app called Root Checker from developer joeykrim.Install Root Checker for free from the Google Play Store Once you've installed the app, simply open it up and tap "Verify Root." From here, tap "Grant" when prompted to give the app Superuser access, and if everything went off without a hitch, you'll see a message saying "Congratulations! Root access is properly installed on this device!"
More Information About Systemless RootThe best part about this new root method is that (so far), Android Pay seems to work without a hitch, and applying OTA updates shouldn't be as difficult as it was with previous root methods. In the future, provided you didn't make any significant changes to the system partition using root access, you should only have to flash the stock boot image with the fastboot flash boot boot.img command to get your device ready for a system update. One downside, though, is that you will lose root access if you perform a factory reset. But getting it back shouldn't be much of an issue, since you'll only have to flash the SuperSU ZIP again in TWRP to re-root.What are your thoughts on this new systemless root method? News: What the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification Means on Your Apple Watch

News: What the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification Means on Your Apple Watch

Waking up your Apple Watch to see "your heart has shown signs of an irregular rhythm suggestive of atrial fibrillation" might come as a shock. While your watch can send you warnings if it detects a fast or low heart rate, those messages are pretty vague, while the abnormal arrhythmia alert can downright scary. So what should you do if you receive one of these AFib notifications? Before going further, let's talk heart a little bit. During activity such as exercise, your target heart rate will be anywhere between 100 and 175 beats per minute (bpm), depending on your age. But that's not normally used for detecting heart problems.Don't Miss: What the High Heart Rate Warning on Your Apple Watch Means When you're not active, your resting heart rate should be between 60 and 100 bpm, though this can fluctuate a little depending on your lifestyle. When your heartbeat, or pulse, dips below the lowest resting heart rate on a regular basis, you may have bradycardia. When your resting heart rate is higher than 100 bpm often, it may be a sign of tachycardia. Now, when the upper chambers of your heart beat abnormally fast while the lower chambers beat near normal, that's an irregular heart pattern, or "flutter," otherwise known as atrial fibrillation.Atrial fibrillation is a serious, yet manageable, condition, and it's the most common type of arrhythmia. But does your Apple Watch actually know when this heart fluttering is happening? How do you know when it becomes a problem? And what could it mean overall for your health?Note: this article is not meant to diagnose or give medical advice. If you are concerned about your health, please seek medical attention.
How Does the Apple Watch Measure Heart Rate?Your Apple Watch has a built-in optical heart sensor that's great for measuring heart activity. The sensor is comprised of light-sensitive photodiode sensors, which work in conjunction with a number of green and infrared LEDs.When you're moving, especially during exercise, the Apple Watch uses the green lights to measure and keep track of your active heart rate. When you don't move for a while, the IR lights are used to keep track of your resting heart rate.Upgrade Your Apple Watch: See Deals from Amazon | Apple | Best Buy | WalmartBecause your watch only looks for irregular heart rhythm during periods of inactivity, we'll want to focus on the IR lights. These LEDs boot up once your Apple Watch determines enough motionless time has passed, and they measure your heart rate at the watch's discretion. We don't know exactly how often the watch checks for your heart rate. However, Apple lets us know it looks for abnormal heart rates within 10-minute intervals. If your heart rate becomes irregular during one of these intervals, you receive the notification.

Where to Find Irregular Heart Rate Notification HistoryIn many cases, the first alert you receive is the only one you'll get before taking action. However, if you receive multiple alerts or you clear the alert from your Apple Watch's Notification Center, Apple makes sure you can retrieve them from the Health app. This also includes any high and low heart rate notifications you may have received. To find your notification history, open the Health app, then tap the "Health Data" tab at the bottom. Select "Heart," then tap "Irregular Rhythm Notifications." Here, you'll find a complete list of all irregular heart rate notifications you've received on your Apple Watch, sorted by most recent.
What Could My Irregular Heart Beat Alert Mean?If the notification is correct in identifying an irregular heartbeat, you could have AFib. As mentioned above, AFib is short for atrial fibrillation, which is a condition where the upper chamber of the heart beats irregularly. This results in the ventricles, the two main chambers of the heart, from receiving an adequate amount of blood, therefore causing the lower chambers of the heart to beat much slower.According to the American Heart Association, there are multiple AFib diagnoses:Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: This type comes in short episodes, where your heart rhythm returns to normal within seven days; This can be as the result of healing on its own or through medical intervention. People with this type usually on experience it a few times each year, but it's unpredictable and can turn into a more serious stage of atrial fibrillation. Causes can include extreme stress, after a heavy night of drinking, stimulant medications, caffeine, low potassium levels, low magnesium levels, viral infections, hyperthyroidism, and ... the list is too long to say it all. Persistent atrial fibrillation: This type lasts longer than seven days, and just like paroxysmal above, it can heal on its own through time. It might also require medical attention to return the heart to normal sinus rhythm. Sometimes that can be done with medication or from low-voltage jolts (electrical cardioversion) to the heart. Causes can include history with the above type, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, binge-drinking, obesity, extreme stress, lung disease, and more. Long-standing atrial fibrillation: This type of AFib lasts longer than 12 months, and doesn't go away during that time. Medication and electrical cardioversion may not help. Surgery will likely be needed to resolve the issue, possibly where a cardiologist will burn certain areas of the heart to get the heart's electrical system working normally again. A pacemaker may also help. Causes can include history with the above types and any of their causes. Permanent atrial fibrillation: This type lasts indefinitely. No known surgery or electrical jolts can help cure this, and usually the only course of actions is medication that can help normalize the pulse as much as possible to prevent risk of stroke. Causes can include history with the above types and any of their causes. Valvular atrial fibrillation: This type is when a valve in the heart is at fault. Causes can include problems with an artificial valve, when a valve stiffens, or when the valve doesn't close properly and lets blood flow in the wrong direction. Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: This type is not caused by a heart valve issue, as described above. However, there is not a standard definition of this type yet agreed upon by doctors other than what was just said. Causes can include sleep apnea, alcohol, caffeine, high blood pressure, lung problems, extreme stress, and hyperthyroidism. The universal symptom of AFib is a quivering or fluttering heartbeat. Of course, it comes with an array of other symptoms, such as fatigue, rapid or irregular heartbeat, fluttering or thumping in your chest, dizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety, weakness, faintness, confusion, difficulty exercising, sweating, and chest pain or pressure.
So, Should I Go to the Doctor? While we have done our research on the topic of AFib and Apple Watch's AFib notifications, we are not licensed medical professionals. We cannot offer medical advice to our readers — we can only explain how these notifications work and what might be causing them in general. As for the Apple Watch, it cannot be used to diagnose conditions. As Dr. Daniel Cantillon, the research director of cardiac electrophysiology and pacing at Cleveland Clinic, explains:Digital health technology is incredible and rapidly changing our world. Many heart rhythm cardiologists, including myself, are already incorporating smartphone-based and ECG watch data into their practices. However, at the end of the days, these are simply tools. Any good tool has its use-cases and limitations. If you have atrial fibrillation [irregular, often rapid heart rate], you should be seeing a heart rhythm cardiologist. If you're experiencing symptoms associated with abnormal heart rates, whether fast or slow, you should seek medical evaluation. That's all there is to it. If you receive an AFib alert on your Apple Watch, and/or you are experiencing the symptoms of AFib listed above, you should seek medical attention. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' annual Health & Fitness special coverage. How To: Make Android's Clock App Open Directly to the Alarm Tab

How To: Make Android's Clock App Open Directly to the Alarm Tab
The basic clock app on Android devices is functional and has a few nice features. One of these is a "World Clock" view, which lets you see the current time in different cities across the world, and shows the time in your location at the top.But of course, the local time in your area is already displayed in the status bar at the top of any screen. So when you open the clock app, chances are you're not looking to see the time—more than likely, you open your clock app mainly to set an alarm. If that's the case, you should check out the latest Xposed module from developer moneytoo. It's a nice and simple module that makes your clock app skip the "World Time" view and open directly to the alarm tab instead. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted device running Android 4.4.4 or lower Xposed Framework installed Unknown Sources enabled

Install "Desk Clock Alarm"To begin, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app and search for Desk Clock Alarm, then tap the top result. From here, swipe over to the Versions tab, then hit the "Download" button next to the most recent entry. When that's finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module hasn't been activated yet and that a reboot is needed. Just tap the "Activate and reboot" button on this notification, and Xposed will handle the rest for you. When you get back up, no further setup is needed. Just open your clock app, and it will immediately display the "Alarm" tab. For most users, this module gets straight to the point, since your clock app now opens to the tab you probably wanted to use in the first place. Are there any other minor annoyances like this that you would like to see fixed? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

Just as we saw in Android KitKat, battery percentage information is absent from the status bar. While we were able to enable a hidden setting to show that all-important number in KitKat, you could see why it was never enabled—the white text on the white battery icon made it nearly impossible to read.

Because I compared some Spotify songs with songs I own that I have tagged with ReplayGain tags and 89.0 dB target volume. These pretty much have the same volume as their Spotify counterparts with Spotify normalization enabled. But I think my local MP3s sound a little better than the 320 kBit Spotify streams, in general.
Why Spotify's 'set the same volume level for all tracks
productionadvice.co.uk/spotify-same-volume-setting/
For casual "shuffle" listening, you can enable Spotify's 'set the same volume level for all tracks' option - and put up with some pretty crass limiting on more dynamic material, unfortunately. If you want to listen to a whole album with the internal dynamics intact and no extra limiting, you can disable it.

How To: 24 New Features & Changes the Android Oreo Update Gives Your LG V30
Its official: On May 8, T-Mobile finally released the Android Oreo update for the LG V30 and V30+. Now, every major US wireless carrier has pushed the update. For me, this update is a big deal. Not only does Android Oreo bring some new tools and features, but LG has also included a few additions as well.Recently, LG released the LG V30S ThinQ. This device was a new variant of the V30 that added a number of software changes. Specifically, it included a "machine learning enhancement," labeled as part of the ThinQ branding. And with the Orero update, LG has brought this enhancement to the V30 as well.

1. Redesigned Setting MenuThe most significant visual changes in Android Oreo are found in the Settings menu where the layout for many options has changed. While the default "Tab view" is relatively the same, "List view" layout has been reworked. Options such as "Network & internet" and "System" have been tweaked to match the ASOP version of the Android Oreo. The side menu, introduced with Android Nougat, has been removed, confiding navigation to just scrolling.

2. New Battery MenuOne example of this redesign is the "Battery" menu. The Oreo updates changed its layout to help you get a better grasp of your apps' impact on the battery life at a glance. On the main page of the "Battery" menu is a list of apps, their battery consumption, and screen usage. Under the option "Battery usage," you can see screen-on-time under "Screen usage." There is also another list of battery consumption based on system apps and sensors such as Wi-Fi and GPS.

3. Redesigned App Info PageAndroid Oreo includes new features that can be accessed by third-party apps. To better manage which app can access these feature, individual App info pages have an updated layout. When applicable, apps have a new grouping called "Advanced" which informs the app usage of new features. These new features include picture-in-picture usage and the ability to sideload apps (more on both these features later).

4. New Hi-Fi Bluetooth CodecsThe V30 now supports several additional Bluetooth codecs, particularly those used for Hi-Fi quality audio. V30 users will now be able to take advantage of aptX HD and LDAC whenever connected to a compatible Bluetooth accessory. With this inclusion, the V30 is one of a few devices offering Hi-Fi audio both wirelessly and with a wired connection (thanks to Quad DAC).

5. Autofill APIThe feature that I am the most excited for is the ability to autofill usernames and passwords. One of the biggest gripes I had when switching to a password manager was the need to always copy and paste your credentials now that I no longer know them. Especially with my phone, having to switch back and forth between apps was time-consuming and extended the time for setting up new phones. With Android Oreo, this is no longer the case. As long as your favorite password manager supports the feature, you can autofill your login information to all your favorite app with a touch of the screen.

6. No More 'Unknown Sources'As with all Android updates, Google brings in new tools to help improve the security of the operating system and its users. One example of this changes comes in the form of changing how "Unknown sources" operates. Previous Android versions made "Unknown sources" provide a global permission to all apps once enabled. This allowed malicious apps to sideload malware unknowingly since its permission was already granted. However, with Oreo, this is no longer the case. "Unknown sources" must now be enabled on a per-app basis. This gives you more control as it is easier to disable the feature on a particular app which you don't fully trust while remaining enabled on ones you do.More Info: How to Sideload Apps on Oreo with 'Unknown Sources' Gone

7. Notification ChannelsNotifications received a major overhaul with Android 8.0 Oreo. One of the biggest changes comes in the form of Notification Channels, which allows apps to categorize their various notifications. Within these grouping, notifications can be managed individually, allowing for specific types of alerts to adjust while not affecting others. For example, users can lower the priority of certain types of alerts while keeping the more important ones at higher alerts. Developers must implement the new tool into their app but, at least for now, every Google app uses this feature.More Info: How Notification Channels Work in Android 8.0 Oreo

8. Snooze NotificationsSpeaking of notifications, Android Oreo also gives LG V30 customers the ability to snooze individual notifications. Now, whenever you get an alert, you can decide to either deal with it then or later. If you rather deal with it later, you can snooze the notification. Similar to the snooze button on your alarm clock, this will turn off the current alert and alert you later.
9. Overlay Sticky NotificationAnother new change to improve security comes in the form of improvements to the awareness of the operation of apps. With Android Oreo, when an app is using screen overlay, a sticky notification will display which can't be dismissed. This alerts you of the potential danger to trusting this app, protecting you against potential harmless ones.

10. New Music NotificationThe music notification has also been updated, coming in the form of a visual change. The background color and playback controls color will now reflect the colors used in the cover art of the song currently playing. While this new feature is supported by all music apps, you can enjoy it when playing music via YouTube, Google Play Music, and Spotify.
11. Support for U2F Security KeysIn another attempt to improve security, Android Oreo includes native support for U2F security keys. These are physical keys which acts as another form of authentication. Typically, with USB drives, if an app supports them, authentication will require your password and possession of the security key.Don't Miss: How to Use U2F Security Keys to Access Your Google Account
12. Verified Boot 2.0Verified Boot is a security feature which prevents your device from booting up if any aspect of the software is altered. It protects your device from apps which attempt to obtain root access secretly. With Verified Boot, if Android OS detectsany modification, the phone won't boot.Verified Boot 2.0 adds to this protection by adding Rollback Protection. Now, if an app (or thief) attempts to return your device to Android Nougat or any other older version of Android which is less secure, the operating system won't let it.

13. More Granular Storage ControlsThe "Storage" menu has received an update to help you navigate its information. Unlike the previous version, apps and files are now grouped into categories based on their operation. By selecting the group, you can head to a list of all the appropriate apps and files. Managing your data is easier as it becomes simpler to locate apps with redundant operations.
14. Package Installer Progress BarThe Package Installer has received a slight makeover with the latest update. The progress bar represents the current progress of the installation. There is also a "Cancel" button at the bottom right, which allows you to stop the app installation (pending the progress isn't nearly complete).

15. Picture-in-Picture ModeProbably the biggest front-end change to Android is the inclusion of the picture-in-picture mode. Videos (and turn-by-turn directions) can be reduced to a small movable window to continue viewing while interacting with other apps on your phone.Currently, support is limited to few apps such as VLC, Google Maps, and YouTube (when you pay for YouTube Red). Netflix supports the feature but only when your device is using Android 8.1 Oreo.

16. Smart Text SelectionManaging texts just got a whole lot easier with Android Oreo on the LG V30. After highlighting a string of text (or phrases), depending on its contents, Android will display relevant additional options to interact with it. For example, when highlighting a phone number, you will be present with a button to open the dialer. When highlighting an address, a Google Maps button shows up.

17. Adaptive IconsTo help improve the uniform look of icons in the app drawer and home screen, Google introduced Adaptive Icons with Android Oreo. With this feature, you can now set icons to the same shape and size, providing a uniform look.

18. Updated App ShortcutsAndroid Nougat first introduced app shortcuts, a sub-menu available by long-pressing an app's icon. With Android Oreo, the look changed for the default home screen launcher. Instead of separate blocks stacked close together, app shortcuts are all within one big block with gray dividing lines. Additionally, in the upper-right corner is access to the app info page and widget (if applicable).
19. App Icon BadgeThis latest feature borrows from iOS, adding another way to interact with notifications. App Icon Badge is a small dot with a number counter which appears in the upper-right corner of the icon. The dot represents a new notification and the number reflects the number of new alerts.Long-pressing an icon with a badge will allow you view the notifications. You can select individual apps or swipe them away similar to how you would interact with them in the notificaiton shade.

20. New EmojisWith Android Oreo, LG V30 users get to enjoy the new Emojis 5.0. Finalized in March 2017, this new list increases the number of available emojis to 183, with 56 being brand new. Some examples are below. Image by Jeremy Burge/Twitter
ThinQ FeaturesBesides the new changes brought by Android Oreo, LG has included some new features which are a part of its ThinQ branding. ThinQ is the new marketing term for its application of machine learning enhancements on its products. The LG V30S ThinQ, which launched earlier this year, was the first device to showcase these features and now the regular V30 will also gain its functionality.

21. AI CamThe AI Cam is a new mode of the camera app which uses machine learning to improve photography. Using object recognition, facial recognition, and other detection tools, all things are identified that are contained in the viewfinder. While it processes the scenes, objects, and people, QTags will appear. QTags are small text snippets that reflect the identification of the thing by the V30. After identifying all components of the image, AI cam will suggest specific camera settings to best capture the image.

22. QLensAn alternative to Google Lens, QLens uses machine learning to provide additional information about objects in the viewfinder. Once you switch to QLens, you take a picture of the object and V30 will reveal information about it. You can perform Amazon searches to find products information, search Pinterest to find the items on the social media platform, or scan QR code.

23. Bright ModeWhen taking a photo in low light, photographers now have access to a new mode to assist them. Known as "Bright Mode," this mode combines four pixels into one (also known as pixel binning) to capture more light, making night shots more feasible.

24. New Voice CommandsThe second component of ThinQ is the improvement to Google Assistant. Seeing how voice commands benefits significantly from machine learning, LG has partnered with Google to add 32 exclusive voice commands to help its customer better navigate around the phone. These new commands take advantage of some of the unique features found in the V30 such as the wide-angle rear camera and the additional video modes. Besides this changes, the V30 also receives one of the latest security patches (April) which will significantly improve protection. With this update, the V30 almost becomes a new device. With its new ThinQ ability and the number of new changes which comes with Android 8.0 Oreo, holding onto the V30 a little bit longer until the V40 comes out becomes much more feasible.Do you like the new ThinQ additions? News: Drop That KindleAmazon Removes Encryption Support for Fire Tablets (Update: It's Coming Back)

If you have personal information stored on a Kindle Fire tablet, be warned that Amazon has removed encryption support for Fire OS 5. Image by David Scovetta/Twitter So if you have stuff on these devices...maybe a risque book, or private notes, or pictures you'd rather not let out to the world, now would be the time to remove them. And unless Amazon changes its mind and re-enables encryption, don't use your device for anything personal, as anyone who gets a hold of it will be able to gain access to everything on it.
Update: March 8, 2016Amazon has reported to Reuters that the company will bring back encryption to its Fire tablets after uproar about the online retailer removing it from Fire OS 5, the current iteration of its custom Android skin."We will return the option for full-disk encryption with a Fire OS update coming this spring," company spokeswoman Robin Handaly told Reuters. This comes days after Amazon jointly filed an amicus brief to offer support towards Apple's fight against the FBI.End UpdateAmazon offered no explanation for the decision, but it's likely a product of Apple's ongoing disagreement with the U.S. government. It's a strange move though, since other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook, as well as a slew of others, have put their support behind Apple.Could it be that Amazon has a gut feeling that Apple won't win its battle with the government and is preemptively doing away with encryption so that it never has to wage a similar fight? Or maybe it's just trying to win favor with the government, when so many other companies are opposing it?This whole matter also begs the question of how safe you can feel if you've got an Echo, Amazon's voice-controlled smart device. Echo's mic is always on, and everything it hears you say will be sent to Amazon for "processing." If you do have one, I'd make sure to have any important conversations out in D Pod so that HAL..err, Alexa doesn't hear you.If you want to keep your Kindle Fire tablet encrypted, and haven't upgraded to Fire OS 5 yet, don't. You may be running old software, but at least you'll be secure. And once more. If you are using a Kindle Fire tablet that has been upgraded to Fire OS 5, your device is no longer secure, so remove all your personal information, and make sure you don't use the device for anything personal in the future.
