News: Google's Battery Issues Seem to Be Affecting Pixel Users, Too
In recent weeks, thousands of Nexus 6P users have reported that their devices are shutting down with 30% or more battery life remaining. The phones won't start back up until they're plugged into a charger, so it's as if the battery completely dies even though there is plenty of juice left. But Google's battery woes apparently aren't ending there. Just today, multiple Pixel users have reported similar issues on Google's latest flagship phones, so it looks as though the same battery problem is affecting more than just one device.Don't Miss: Nexus 6P Battery Randomly Dying? It's Not Just You
What's HappeningAs Redditor vrski__15 explained, the battery issue on the Pixel is virtually identical to the problem that many Nexus 6P users have had recently:Twice in [the] last 5 days, the phone shut down abruptly while I [was] in middle of something. In both instances, battery [level] was between 25-35%, and the phone, under normal conditions, should have lasted for at least [an additional] 3-4 hours.
— Redditor vrski_15In that same thread, Redditor buggsy2126 chimed in to say that they had experienced the same issue with their own Pixel. Then, in a completely separate thread, jdohgamer reported that their Pixel XL has shut down with 10-15% battery life remaining on several occasions. If you're keeping count, we're now up to three separate user reports claiming that the Pixel and Pixel XL are suffering from the same bizarre battery problem that has plagued many Nexus 6P users. We contacted Google on the matter, and were told that the company is investigating these early reports of Pixel battery issues, but has no further information to share at this time. The situation is still developing, but this could be a sign that the Nexus 6P's battery problems aren't just limited to a hardware issue. If the same issue is indeed present on the Pixel and Pixel XL, which use two different battery cells, then we're now seeing the problem on three unique pieces of hardware. Considering that, it's possible that this is a software issue with Android, or more specifically, the recent Android Nougat update. It's still worth noting that this issue has only been reported by a few Pixel users so far, which means it could just be a fluke, and the battery problem may indeed still be limited to the Nexus 6P.If you've been experiencing similar issues on your own device, let us know which model and Android version in the comment section below. Otherwise, stay tuned right here, because we'll be monitoring the issue closely for further news and updates.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

Hey, Siri: How to Activate Siri in iOS 8 Without Lifting a Finger

Hey, Siri: How to Activate Siri in iOS 8 Without Lifting a Finger
It seems that Apple is taking a page from Google's book with their new "Hey, Siri" voice activation feature in iOS 8. This feature mimics the one found in Google Now, the voice-activated intelligent personal assistant available to just about all Android users. Apple's version allows you to bring up Siri with a simple voice command, but there's a small catch.

Look Ma, No HandsIn order to enable this hands-free feature, head over to Settings -> General -> Siri and Allow "Hey Siri".
Here's the Catch...Your iOS device needs to be connected to a power source for the Voice Activation feature to work. If you're unplugged, nothing happens. This is a simple battery-saver move, but it only applies to older devices. If you're getting an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you will not have to be plugged in to use "Hey, Siri" mode.UPDATE: Newer devices, like the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, do not need to plug into a power outlet if they have iOS 9 installed.Subsequently, with "Hey, Siri," Apple removed "Raise to Speak" as an option to start Siri, since it's basically the same thing, only now you have to actually talk to Siri like s/he's a real person. They probably should have left this feature in for older devices, since we have to be plugged in to use voice activation by itself.

Using Hey, SiriOnce you're connected to a power source, just say "Hey, Siri." I was able to bring up Siri pretty easily on the first try. I can see myself using it when I charge my phone in the car and need to get directions, send a text message, or make a phone call without having to take my eyes off the road. Yay for safety.

How To: Boost Fortnite Performance on Android by Changing These Settings

How To: Boost Fortnite Performance on Android by Changing These Settings
Fortnite's long awaited arrival on Android has ramped up excitement among gamers who are installing the beta version in astounding numbers. With so many midrange and budget devices running Android, however, it's important to stay on top of your device's performance to ensure smooth and uninterrupted gameplay. While this is especially true for non-flagship Android devices in particular, even flagships can use a boost in performance to minimize hiccups and give you that extra edge when competing against opponents. Because of this, we've rounded up some tips to ensure your phone keeps up with you as you duke it out with other players while playing Fortnite.Don't Miss: Get Fortnite Battle Royale Running on Almost ANY Android Device

1. Enable Airplane Mode & Use Wi-Fi OnlyIf you want stable gameplay with Fortnite, you'll need a stable internet connection. Mobile data can be spotty, so it's best to stay on Wi-Fi while you're playing, provided you have a fast home internet connection. If you do, we also recommend enabling Airplane Mode either via Quick Settings or the Settings app to disable mobile data altogether — you can turn Wi-Fi back on after enabling Airplane Mode and it will serve as your only connection.

2. Keep Apps from Automatically UpdatingBy default, your Android device is set to automatically update installed apps while connected to Wi-Fi, which can seriously bog down your device as it gets swamped with unwanted app updates while playing Fortnite. To stave off this potential headache, open the Play Store app and either tap the hamburger menu button or swipe in from the left edge of the screen.Select "Settings" within the side menu and tap on "Auto-update apps" on the following page. Hit "Do not auto-update apps" on the popup that appears, then exit out of Google Play. From here on out, apps will no longer update automatically, leaving you more resources to focus on playing Fortnite.

3. Enable Game Mode (Samsung, Razer, OnePlus, Huawei, Sony)If you have a newer Galaxy, Razer, OnePlus, Huawei, or Sony, you can optimize your phone's performance for gaming. These devices each offer a Gaming Mode of some sort, which you can enable to boost performance in Fortnite. Since Samsung's the biggest smartphone OEM, I'll show you how it works on Galaxy devices. To start, head to Settings and go to "Device Maintenance." Then, tap on "Performance mode" and set it to "Game." It's definitely worth enabling the switch next to "Game Launcher" before you hit "Apply" here. With Game Mode on, use the Game Launcher app to open Fortnite and you'll see a new button on the left side of your navigation bar. Hitting this button reveals a menu from which you can access options, such as the ability to record your screen while playing Fortnite, in addition to disabling alerts (except for incoming phone calls) to help you focus more on gameplay. As I mentioned, Game Mode isn't only limited to Galaxy devices, as slight variations of the same feature can be found on other handsets like the Razer Phone. Specific settings will vary, but the gist is the same. The OnePlus 5's Gaming mode, for instance, is more simplified and lets you tweak similar settings as highlighted above, minus screenshots and screen recording. Gaming Mode for OnePlus phones can be accessed via a long press on its Quick Settings Tile. Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Gaming

4. Turn on Force 4x MSAAIf you feel like the graphics in Fortnite aren't up to snuff, you might want to enable a hidden setting called 4x MSAA (multi-sample anti-aliasing). In essence, the setting forces the game to render at a resolution that's four times the size of the display, then compresses down to fill in any jagged lines for substantially sharper graphics. To try it out, unlock the hidden Developer Options menu, then open it up from Settings. Scroll down until you arrive at the "Hardware-Accelerated Rendering" section, then enable the switch next to "Turn on 4x MSAA." It's worth noting that while this setting boosts your game's performance, it can drain your phone's battery faster, so keep that in mind. Also, be sure to keep "USB debugging" disabled in Developer Options, as having this enabled will prevent you from entering any matches.

5. Keep Background Processes at a MinimumBesides Force 4x MSAA, there are other settings you can tweak within Developer Options to ensure maximum allocation of your device's resources to Fortnite. Don't keep activities and Background process limit are settings that essentially place severe restrictions on background process, but to varying degrees.Enabling "Don't keep activities," on one hand, will completely close any apps that aren't being used, ensuring your phone can devote all its RAM to Fortnite. Unfortunately, this makes multitasking impossible, as it'll instantly kill the game once you leave it. On the other hand, selecting "Background process limit" lets you choose how many processes can run in the background. Selecting "No background processes," for instance, will prevent any recent apps from running on the background, while still letting apps that rely on background processes — like email and calendar apps — to sync and send you alerts as they normally would. Popular games like Fortnite continue to push the boundaries of smartphone capabilities, and companies are answering the call with ever more advanced devices meant to handle the stresses associated with gaming to deliver console quality gaming. Prime examples of these are the Razer Phone with its 120 Hz refresh rate and the Galaxy Note 9 that features an improved cooling system and 4,000 mAh battery.Fortunately, you don't need to have the latest gaming phone to enjoy Fortnite in full — just make a habit of employing some or all of these tips before diving into the game. Which of these tips made the most difference in your gameplay? As always, leave a comment below to let us know what you think, or offer any other tips you may have.Don't Miss: Increase Performance for Individual Apps on Your Galaxy S9Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: Apple News Glitch Spammed iPhone Users with the Same Notification Over & Over

Well, that was annoying. Earlier today, iOS users — including myself — were getting plagued with the same CNN news alert over and over again. While the news itself is significant (the guy who sent that false missile alert in Hawaii was fired), people usually get the gist after just one alert, not dozens. While the notifications seemed to have stopped (for now), this wasn't just a small problem — this was happening to iOS users across the country. Users on Reddit and Twitter expressed their frustration with the constant alerts. Even Trevor Noah of the Daily Show had a frantic tweet about it:CNN STOP SPAMMING MY PHONE!!!Am I the only person who can't turn this Hawaii story notification off???
— @Trevornoah/Twitter Images by New_Roman_Times/Twitter, ys_notes/Twitter @AppleSupport never mind. I deleted the apple news app. I got the same notification about the same news story every 30 seconds for 20 minutes and if you can't bother to fix this I'm out. I prefer my news without spam.
— alycia_stack/TwitterWell, now we know how to make iPhone owners go crazy all at once. Send them hundreds of non-stop Apple News notifications. Lol. But whose fault was it? CNN or Apple?

Gmail 101: How to Delete or Archive Emails with One Swipe

Gmail 101: How to Delete or Archive Emails with One Swipe
Throughout the day, I receive countless emails from various e-commerce sites who are trying to get me to spend money I don't have. Normally, I dismiss the notification on my smartphone, but when I open the Gmail app, I find all those unread messages waiting to be dealt with. Fortunately, Gmail has a way to quickly get rid of all those emails with one swipe.Gmail lets you swipe emails to quickly archive or delete them, and you can choose which of these two functions you want the swipe gesture to perform. So instead of opening each email and tapping a button, you can swipe horizontally from the main list to delete or archive the email. Swiping is by far the fastest method to eliminate unread messages, and it only takes a minute to set the gesture up.

Choosing a Swipe Action on AndroidBy default, the swipe gesture is set to archive emails. To change this to delete, open Gmail and select the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, then choose "Settings" and select "General settings." Select the "Gmail default action" option and choose "Delete." Now, swiping left or right on an email will delete rather than archive.

Choosing a Swipe Action on iOSIf you're using an iPhone or iPad, open Gmail and tap the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, then choose "Settings" and select your email address. From there, tap "When removing messages, I prefer to…" and choose "Move to trash" to change the swipe gesture from archiving to deleting emails.

Using the Swipe GestureFinally, return to your inbox and swipe horizontally on any email. If you switched the gesture to delete, a red background will emerge, revealing a white garbage can icon within it. If you decided to keep the default action of archiving, an open box with a downward-facing arrow inside of a green background will show instead. Either way, once you swipe your finger to one side, you will be notified that you either deleted the item or archived it. With the swipe gesture, it's easy to dismiss unimportant emails. A few quick swipes to the left or right, and you can quickly get rid of all your unread messages to focus on the emails that matter. Which do you prefer, swipe to delete or swipe to archive? Let us know in the comments below.Don't Miss:How to Clear Your Gmail Search History on Android & iOSFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: Snapchat 'Upgraded' Its Android Camera Quality with 10-Year-Old Software

News: Snapchat 'Upgraded' Its Android Camera Quality with 10-Year-Old Software
You may have noticed improved photo quality in the Android Snapchat app in recent months. Believe it or not, this is because Snapchat only just recently started using a decade-old camera API that predates every Android phone in existence. The basic premise of APIs is simple — they're tools that the operating system provides to let apps make use of hardware and other system functions. With that in mind, let me explain why Snapchat is taking better photos recently, but is still far from being a high quality camera app for Android.
Camera2: The API Most Photo Apps UseAndroid actually has a robust camera API that apps can use to control your phone's cameras at a very deep level. If leveraged properly, Camera2 API will allow an app to control manual exposure, ISO, shutter speed, focus, and even capture RAW images using your phone's camera hardware, among other features.Camera2 API made its debut in Android Lollipop, so every phone running 5.0 or higher supports it. Since Lollipop was announced nearly 4 years ago, more than 82% of all Android devices in the world can take advantage of the top-notch photo capabilities in Camera2 API.However, Snapchat only supports Camera2 API on select phones. The only device we're able to confirm is the Pixel 2, as Snapchat leverages the Pixel Visual Core in this device, which requires Camera2 API support to use.Don't Miss: The Next Big Thing in Smartphone Cameras is Machine Learning

Camera1: The API Snapchat Is Finally Starting to UseA Snap Inc. spokesperson confirmed to us that the Android Snapchat app is now starting to use Camera1 API on many devices. This API was last updated in early 2008 with Android API level 2, which didn't even have a dessert-themed codename or version number because it was a prerelease version of Android. In other words, the camera API Snapchat is currently using on most devices was finalized before commercially-available Android phones even existed. It's since been deprecated (read: abandoned) as of June 2014, because Google would prefer that apps use the newer, more robust Camera2 API.Before the recent updates that brought in Camera1 API support, Snapchat was effectively taking a screen grab from your camera's viewfinder as a workaround so that it didn't have to use any Android camera APIs at all. This was an effective method for supporting as many Android devices as possible, but the image quality it produced was infamously bad. Snapchat's old no-API capture method compared to Instagram. To be clear, updating their app to use Camera1 API instead of this old workaround was a huge step in the right direction. It's largely why so many users have recently reported a bump in image quality. But still, that bump could've been bigger had Snapchat chosen to use the newer Camera2 API.An interesting aspect here is that, in using Camera1 API, Snapchat isn't getting many benefits for the front-facing camera — the camera many Snapchatters use most. This is because Camera1 API was written before most phones had front cameras, so it doesn't provide tap-to-focus or other selfie cam enhancements. There are some technical limitations to Camera2 API, which is probably why Snapchat has opted to use the older API for now. Some lower-end phones running Lollipop or higher don't have full support for the newer camera API. In these cases, doing simple things like requesting to turn on the camera flash can cause the app to crash. However, Snapchat could get around these issues by coding their app to access Camera2's varying levels: Legacy, Limited, Full, or Level 3.

Snapchat's Quality Improved, but There's a Long Way to GoNow that Snapchat is at least using Camera1 API, we decided to test it against itself. We installed an older version (10.3) on our Galaxy S6, which as best as we can tell does not use Camera2 API on any Snapchat version. We took a picture with v10.3, then updated to the current Snapchat version and took the same picture again to see how much of a difference the recently-added Camera1 API made.Ignore the slight differences in exposure level (though that's a byproduct of not using the camera to its full potential) and focus more on the details and clarity. The newer version provides a greater HDR-like balance as well. (1) Snapchat 10.3 using no camera API on the Galaxy S6. (2) Snapchat 10.29 using Camera1 API on the Galaxy S6. However, we took that same picture again using the Instagram app, which does take advantage of Camera2 API on the Galaxy S6. If you look closely, you'll see that Snapchat still has a ways to go in order to close the gap in picture quality. (1) Snapchat 10.29 using Camera1 API on the Galaxy S6. (2) Instagram using Camera2 API on the Galaxy S6. To put it another way, there's a clear difference between Snapchat's old method of grabbing a still image from the camera feed when compared to the new method of using Camera1 API. But they're still not close to matching the image quality of Instagram and other apps using Camera2 API. We started investigating this issue again for two reasons. First, user reports surfaced that Snapchat was asking for permissions using the granular Android 6.0+ model. This is a step in the right direction, and another example of Snapchat finally using Android tools properly, but it's not an indication of Camera2 API support. The second reason we started looking into this issue was because Snapchat started a new ad campaign marketing itself as A New Kind of Camera. We were hoping this meant their rumored revamped Android app was ready and image quality had improved to Instagram levels, but Snapchat is still quite literally a decade behind.Don't Miss: Try These 5 New Snapchat Lenses This Weekend: Yodeling Walmart Kid, Loading Screen & MoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Google's text-to-speech engine is getting pretty good these days. In a recent update, the computerized voice that reads on screen text (like Google Now search results) got an audio quality bump that brought its clarity up to its highest level yet. And with each update, that robotic voice becomes a bit more human.Developer raduzz decided to put these quality improvements to good use with his new app Mail Reader. The app allows you to have your Gmail messages read aloud to you at the press of a button, so you'll never have to squint your eyes to decipher small text again. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Installing Reader for GmailMail Reader (voice assistant) is available for free on Google Play, so search it by name to get it installed. Alternatively, you can head to this link if you'd rather jump right to the install page.

Configure Reader for GmailWhen you first launch Mail Reader, you may encounter a small bug. At least for me, the app gets stuck on the Initializing screen. The developer is aware of this and is working to push a fix as soon as possible. But until then, there's an easy workaround—just head to your Recent Apps menu, swipe Mail Reader away, then reopen the app.For the app to work its magic, you'll need to attach your Gmail account. Tap the Add Account field, then choose your preferred Gmail account from the following menu. A dialog box will appear asking if you'd like to allow Mail Reader to access your Google account. Hit OK on this screen. The developer has given us all a free 14-day trial of the app's premium features, which include automatic mail reading and the ability to add multiple accounts. All other features will continue to work past this 14-day window, but you can still give them a try and see if the $2.69 in-app purchase is worth it to you.To have Mail Reader automatically check for new messages and read them aloud as they come in, tap the Mail checking frequency field. Choose an interval that suits you from the following menu. If you'd rather not be woken up to your phone reading your email messages aloud, tap the App Icon at the top-left corner and head into Mute Hours. Here, you can set the hours during which Mail Reader will not read your messages aloud automatically. Keep in mind that this and the Mail Checking Frequency options are part of the 14-day preview, and these options will not be available past that window without purchasing the pro version. Further down on the app's main screen are a set of options for which parts of the email messages that you'd like to have read aloud. By default, the Sender and Subject will be read, but you can also have the service read the Date and a Summary of the message. Even without the 14-day trial or the pro version, you can always just enter the app and tap Check mail to have new messages read to you. A control window pops up that allows you to skip, pause, and resume playback. This is one of those "Why didn't someone think of this before" apps that offer functionality that just feels natural. How To: Prevent Friends from Snooping Through Your Galaxy S3 When Showing Them a Photo
If you have friends like mine, letting them check out one photo on your phone means they're going to check out all of the photos on your phone. Before you realize what they're doing, it's too late, and they're sending out perverted emails to your coworkers, making you look like a newb at Candy Crush Saga, and viewing your Snapchats for you.Thankfully, developer elesbb over on XDA realized this was an issue and created an app to prevent it called ScreenLock, which definitely lives up to its name. When activated, it disables all touch input and button presses. So when you show a friend a picture, you can lock the screen and the picture is the only thing they can look at. It's downright badass. All you have to do is install it and take a few seconds to set it up and you're well on your way to snoop-free viewing. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Download ScreenLock onto Your GS3This app is not yet in Google Play, so you'll have to grab the ScreenLock APK over on the original XDA page to make sure you're getting the latest version.

Step 2: Enable "Unknown Sources"To install the APK, we need to enable Unknown sources, which can be done by going to Settings -> Security -> Device administration and checking the box next to Unknown sources. Hit OK to enable it. Images via wonderhowto.com Now your device will allow the installation of apps and APK files downloaded from outside of the Google Play Store.

Step 3: Install ScreenLockAfter you have the ScreenLock APK on your GS3 and Unknown sources enabled, you can install the app. Just tap on the file in the Notification tray or in your Downloads, select your installer, and follow the install instructions.

Step 4: Set Up ScreenLockWhen you open up ScreenLock, you will see the options at the very bottom. Check those that you wish, but I'd suggest selecting them all initially, and then move on to Setup unlock gesture. Enter in your unlock gesture at the next screen. Try not to over-complicate it just to be safe. This gesture will need to be input in order to unlock your screen.

Step 5: Use the ScreenLockIf you selected "Use ongoing notification," then you can lock the screen at any page by tapping on that notification in the Notification tray. Now you can test out your new screen lock. You can also lock the screen by holding the Search button (if you have one on your device). When unlocked by your set gesture, you will see a small notification at the bottom of your screen.
ScreenLock Is a Great Way to Keep Snoops from SnoopingSome people have complained that hitting the back or home buttons on their devices disables the lock feature, but as of his last update, and tested on my Galaxy S3, the back and home buttons, as well as the Notification tray are completely disabled. So that really means the screen and your phone are on total lock down when you hand it over to snooptastic friends or significant others.

How To: Fix the 'Software Update Is Required to Connect to Your iPhone' Warning on Your Mac
If you're currently running macOS 10.11 or higher on your Mac and connect your iPhone to sync with iTunes, you may get an alert saying that "a software update is required to connect to your iPhone." Here's everything you need to know about what that means, how to update your system, and what to do if updating doesn't work.
Why This Alert Appears on Your MacGenerally, if your Mac is running the latest macOS version and your iPhone is running the latest iOS version available, you should never see this message appear on your laptop or desktop's screen. If your iPhone is running a newer version of iOS than the macOS version you're running currently supports, you will not be able to sync your iPhone with iTunes if you get the "software update is required to connect to your iPhone" alert. You will, however, still be able to charge your iPhone and use other tools such as Image Capture, Photos, etc.

How to Sync Your iPhone with iTunes AgainIf you have no interest in updating your Mac to the newest macOS, the answer may be painfully obvious. When you see the "A software update is required to connect to your iOS device. Would you like to download and install this update now?" prompt, simply click on "Install" to update the software needed to get your iOS device working with iTunes again on an older macOS version. Another solution would be to open up the App Store on your Mac, head to the "Updates" tab, then update any system software to the latest version. If you're currently running macOS Sierra or lower, it's a good idea to update to macOS High Sierra. Most third-party app developers have had ample time to make sure their apps work with High Sierra, so there should be no compatibility issues there. If updating macOS, iTunes, and iOS to the current versions still presents the prompt above, then you'll need to click on "Install" to download and install the supported software from Apple's servers.

What to Do if It Won't Install the Update? In some cases, installing the update required will hang and present an "installation failed" error after a decent amount of time has passed. In that scenario, it's likely that your iPhone is running a developer beta or public beta software that is yet to be officially supported on the latest stable release of macOS. Let's say you're currently running iOS 12 developer beta 3 or iOS 12 public beta 2. If that's the case and you're currently on the latest macOS High Sierra version, this may be a problem. While Apple is usually pretty good at making sure their iOS betas are compatible with the latest stable version of macOS, sometimes they slip the ball.(For me, I recently had issues with both macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 with my iPhone running the iOS 12 developer beta 3.)In this case, you'll need to be running the latest beta version of macOS, which, for the iOS 12 betas, would be for the macOS Mojave 10.14 beta. Either that, or you'll need to downgrade your iPhone back to the latest stable release of iOS.Don't Miss: How to Downgrade iOS 12 Back to 11.4.1 on Your iPhone If you don't want to jump on the latest macOS beta but would like to stay on the iOS beta, then there's one more thing you can do — install the latest Xcode beta on your Mac. While non-developers will likely have no use for Xcode, unless wanting to sideload apps they're permitted to or needing to run certain Linux-style commands in Terminal, it may be required to get the iPhone syncing with iTunes again.

Installing the Xcode Beta on Your MacXcode, Apple's IDE (integrated development environment) for developers of iOS and Mac apps, is available freely in the App Store. However, this is the latest stable release, not the beta version that you need. To get the latest beta version of Xcode, you just need to visit developer.apple.com/download and sign in using your Apple ID (you don't need to be a developer to do this). Once you're there, simply hit "Download" next to the latest Xcode beta, in my case, that's Xcode 10 beta 3. The download will be an XIP compressed file which is usually pretty large, in my case, over 5 GB. Once it's finished downloading, you'll need to uncompress the file, so double-click on the XIP file in your "Downloads." This will unzip the archive into an application file about twice its size. In my case, it ended up being over 11 GB. Be patient during this process, as it may take a while to uncompress. Once it's finish, you should end up with an "Xcode-beta" app in your "Downloads." Feel free to delete the XIP file to clear up space on your Mac. If you have a stable version of Xcode, you may want to delete that now since two apps over 10 GB may be unnecessary if you don't have enough room for them. Now, just installing the Xcode beta is not good enough. You need to actually double-click on it. When it first opens, you'll be presented with an option to "install additional required components." Click on "Install" to do so. If you have iTunes open, you will need to close it before continuing. You'll need to enter your password in order to proceed. Again, this may take a little bit of time. Once you see the "Welcome to Xcode" window on your Mac, you're all done. You can now quit Xcode and open up iTunes. Your iPhone should now be visible to sync or play music from. If you ever get the error again, repeat these steps to make sure you're running the latest Xcode beta. Overall, it's a good idea to keep the Xcode beta installed until the official version of the Xcode or macOS version that was in testing comes out for you to install as a stable release.Don't Miss: 50+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Block Ads in Android's YouTube App Without Using Xposed

How To: Block Ads in Android's YouTube App Without Using Xposed
Traditional root ad-blockers like AdAway and AdBlock Plus have no effect on YouTube anymore. Until now, if you wanted to get rid of the commercials that play before your favorite videos, there have only been two ways—either by paying for a YouTube Red subscription, or by using an Xposed module to modify the YouTube app itself and force it into not showing ads.But Xposed isn't an option for everyone. Some phones have locked bootloaders, which means no TWRP and no Xposed Framework. And then there's the fact that Xposed breaks Android Pay and similar services, which is a deal breaker for a lot of people. But developer Arter97 has finally found a way around this. He modified the stock YouTube app itself to not show ads, which is basically what Xposed would do, but bundled into one package. Ultimately, this means you only need root to block ads in Android's YouTube app, and it's a fairly simple process.
Requirementsrooted Android device root-enabled file browser
Step 1: Find Your DPI & Processor TypeThe ad-free YouTube APK comes in several different variants that are device-specific. As such, you'll need to know your phone or tablet's processor type and DPI value before you download the app. If you're not sure about your DPI, you can see this number with an app called DPI Checker, which is pretty straightforward.Install DPI Checker for free from the Google Play Store Then, to find your processor type, you can use an app called Droid Hardware Info. It's not quite as straightforward as DPI Checker, so we've covered the process with a full guide, which you can read at the following link.Don't Miss: How to See What Kind of Processor You Have (ARM, ARM64, or x86)

Step 2: Download the Right APK for Your DeviceNow that you know your DPI value and processor type, download the ad-free YouTube APK for your particular device using one of the following links:ARM64 Devices (Any DPI) ARM Devices (240 DPI) ARM Devices (320 DPI) ARM Devices (480 DPI) x86 Devices (480 DPI) Note: Future versions of this app can be downloaded at the developer's website

Step 3: Remove the Old YouTube AppNext up, you'll need to get rid of the stock YouTube app so that you can install the modified version. To do that, I'd suggest using Titanium Backup. So head to the Backup/Restore menu in Titanium Backup, then select the YouTube app from the list. If you want to be on the safe side, you can tap the "Backup!" button on the popup—but to remove the app, just tap the red "Uninstall!" button. From there, confirm your choice on the popup, then you'll be ready to install the ad-free version of YouTube.

Step 4: Create a New 'YouTube' Folder on Your System PartitionNext up, open your favorite file browser and head to the /system/app folder on the root partition of your device. From here, create a new folder, and name it "YouTube" (note the capitalization). From here, long-press the folder you just created, then choose "Permissions" from the menu. Next, set the "Owner" category to Read, Write, and Execute, then set all other categories to just Read and Execute. Or, if your file browser is capable of entering octal permission numbers, just set the value to 0755.

Step 5: Copy the APK to the New Folder & RebootNext up, head to the Download folder on your SD Card or internal storage, where you'll find the ad-free YouTube APK that you downloaded in Step 2. From here, just copy the APK, then head into to the YouTube folder you just created, and paste the file directly in here. When you're done, simply reboot your phone so that the changes will take effect.

Step 6: Enjoy Ad-Free YouTube VideosWhen you get back up, you can continue using the YouTube app as you normally would, but with one main difference: All of the ads will now be gone. The only downside to this method is that you can't update the app through the Google Play Store, but all you'll need to do in the future is just head to the developer's website, grab the latest version, then replace the APK in that /system/app/YouTube folder with the newer file.
