How To: Bring Back the Vertical Recent Apps Menu on Your Galaxy in Android Pie

How To: Bring Back the Vertical Recent Apps Menu on Your Galaxy in Android Pie
The Android 9 Pie update brought a lot of visual changes, some of which are a little too reminiscent of iOS. There's the new gesture controls, which are okay, but then there are things like a left-justified clock and the fact that the recent apps menu now scrolls horizontally instead of vertically. Luckily, Samsung has given us a way to bring back the classic Android style.Horizontal recent apps may look pretty, but they're less functional. When this menu was vertical, you could clearly see the last five or so apps you used, making it easy to switch back to one. But since phones are taller than they are wide, making this menu scroll horizontally means you can only see one or two of your recent apps at a time. With the help of one of Samsung's best apps, though, you can now put things back to the way they were.Don't Miss: Move the Clock Back to the Right Side on Your Galaxy in Android 9

Step 1: Install Good Lock 2019First, know that this will only work if you have a Samsung Galaxy device running the Android 9 Pie update (One UI). This method does not work on other devices. To get started, head to the Galaxy Store (you'll find this app in your app drawer), then search for "Good Lock" and install it. This is Samsung's own app, and it's really useful for modifying all the little things on your Galaxy.Galaxy Store Link: Good Lock (free) Once you get it installed, check your app drawer. Make sure you got the version that's called "Good Lock 2019" instead of "Good Lock 2018." At the time of this writing, Good Lock 2019 hasn't rolled out to all regions and devices. If you got the 2018 version of Good Lock, the update likely hasn't rolled out to you yet. You can try sideloading the 2019 version from the link below, but some users have reported this doesn't work, so you may just have to wait a few weeks to try this.APK Link: Good Lock 2019 Alternatively, you can try a third-party app called NiceLock. It works as a Good Lock replacement for devices and regions where Samsung hasn't rolled out Good Lock 2019. You'll have to install the app from the Play Store link below, then follow the rest of this guide, sideload the APK in Step 2, then open NiceLock instead of Good Lock in Step 3.Play Store Link: NiceLock (free)

Step 2: Install Task ChangerWith the 2019 version of Good Lock installed, the rest is pretty simple. Open Good Lock from your app drawer, then tap the "Task Changer" plugin placeholder. You'll be taken to the Task Changer plugin's installation page, so tap "Install."Note: If you were unable to install Good Lock 2019 in Step 1, you can try sideloading this APK and using NiceLock to launch it.

Step 3: Switch Back to Vertical RecentsNow, open Good Lock (or NiceLock) and tap "Task Changer" — this time, the plugin's interface should open. Tap the toggle next to "Not in use" to turn it on, then select "Layout Type." Choose "List" from the prompt, and you'll be all set! Now, your recent apps menu will be vertically-oriented again. There's even a smooth animation as the tiles fade in and out of view, and a bounce effect when you over-scroll. You can swipe vertically to see more apps (though you can already see five apps at a time on most Galaxy phones), and you can swipe left or right to remove an app from the list. News: Set Rotating Wallpapers of Flickr Images, Instagrams, Tumblr Pics, & More for Your Android Device

Last week, we covered a new, open-source live wallpaper (LWP) called Muzei, and less than a week later we have no less than twenty beautiful add-on extensions to the app.Muzei uses subtle blur and dim effects to create aesthetically pleasing LWPs. The app takes free works of fine art and rotates them daily, creating a living "museum" for your Android device. But the fact that the app is open-source means that anyone can write extensions for it, and right from the get-go, we had a couple for astronomy and reddit pictures.Through the weekend, Google Play became flooded with various new extensions for Muzei. Once downloaded from Google Play, these extensions will be accessible through the Muzei app, so if you haven't grabbed it yet, do so now. Once in the app, these extensions will show on the main screen of Muzei: If an extension has options or settings, those are accessible through the gear icon. Bear in mind, some of these still have a few kinks to work out, but for the most part they are functional—here are some of our favorites, in no particular order.

Muzei Music ExtensionCreated by SimpleCity, Muzei Music Extension utilizes album art from several music players and places them as your wallpaper. There are only a couple of options for this extension, allowing you to choose whether you want to download missing album art through data and Wifi or Wifi-only, as well as the ability to choose image resolution for missing album art through Last.fm.Grab Muzei Music Extension Here

Instagram Muzei AddonCreated by Tony Cosentini, Instagram Muzei Addon will pull your Instagram pictures and display them as a wallpaper. The settings are very simple, simply activate your Instagram account and you're set. This extension will only pull your photos, not the ones displayed on your feed.Grab Instagram Muzei Addon Here Update: Instagram Muzei Addon was updated on February 18th to include support for images from your feed.

Muzei HashCreated by Fourmob, Muzei Hash pulls and displays images based on specific hashtags in Google+. Tags such as #longexposure, #photography, and #wallpaper yield really nice results, but you can customize to your heart's content. Options include user-set update intervals and whether you want the updates via Wifi-only or with your data connection.Grab Muzei Hash Here

Dropzei for MuzeiCreated by Ignasi Busquets, Dropzei for Muzei downloads photos from your Dropbox account and rotates them according to set intervals. The extension allows you to set up multiple, specific folders to pull images from and the amount of time each image displays until it's updated. Simply link the extension to your Dropbox account (done through Settings in Muzei), select your folders, and you're all set.Grab Dropzei for Muzei Here

Cast for MuzeiCreated by Anthony Kiniyalocts, Cast for Muzei pulls images from the Chromecast image repository, which serve as screensavers for Chromecast dongles. Fairly straightforward with no settings to worry about, the extension will change images when Chromecast servers receive new images.Grab Cast for Muzei Here

National Geographic MuzeiCreated by DroidSoft UK, National Geographic Muzei pulls images from the National Geographic Picture Of The Day gallery. Options include the ability to change the refresh frequency, Wifi-only updates, and toggling SmartCache, which may help save some bandwidth.Grab National Geographic for Muzei Here

Muzei - Tumblr PhotosCreated by James OBrien, Muzei - Tumblr Photos shows your favorite Tumblr blogs as LWPs. Settings include the option to add as many blogs as you want, toggle captions and blog names, change update intervals, and update connections (data+Wifi or Wifi-only).Grab Muzei - Tumblr Photos Here

Flickr for MuzeiCreated by Nicolas POMPUY, Flickr for muzei displays Flickr photos as your wallpaper. Extension setting include the ability to filter by "search" or "user" (add as many as you want), refresh rate, and a Wifi-only option.Grab Flickr for muzei Here That's it for now—again, there are a bunch of extensions for Muzei already out there, and that list will only grow with time. Hopefully, you'll dig some of our favorites, but definitely let us know your own favorite extensions in the comments below.

How To: Turn Photos & Selfies into Moving 3D Images on Your Galaxy S3

How To: Turn Photos & Selfies into Moving 3D Images on Your Galaxy S3
The way you use your camera just got a bit more interesting. Phogy, a brand new camera app for Android, allows you to capture pictures with a 3D effect that comes alive when shifting your phone from side to side. From Vivoti, a Singapore-based company, Phogy turns your regular pictures into something much more lifelike and unique (called "phogies"), which you can then share with friends and family. To give you an idea of the effect before diving in to the app, check out the video below. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
And if you like being the subject of your pictures more than anything else, Phogy is great for creating moving 3D selfies (it's even called Phogy, 3D Selfie), as shown extensively in their promotional video. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Giving Your Photos the 3D EffectBefore using the app to take a picture, make sure you have a target that you're going to aim at; whether it's an actual object or just a point in the background.Once that point is set, tap on the camera icon and move your device to right, in an ellipse. After a couple of seconds, the picture will finish and start scanning. Phogy will then shift to a different page, where it will write, analyze, and process the static image into a picture with the 3D effect. Once the processing is all done, you'll see your newly minted creation. Shift your phone from left to right to move the image around. Tip: After playing around with taking pictures, try shifting the direction in other ways, like right-to-left or top-to-bottom, to see various other directions. The "move to right" instruction is simply to get you accustomed to the app.

Sharing Your 3D ImagesAt the top of the screen, you'll see several icons (some of which require in-app purchases): set as wallpaper, delete, picture effects, and share. If you tap on the share icon, you'll have a few formats to choose from: PHOGY (native app format), GIF, and MP4 (video). To view all of the pictures you've shot, you can check them out in the in-app gallery.

Adjusting Your Phogy SettingsIn the settings, you can move such features as move sensitivity, exposure time, resolution, size, quality, and video frame/cycles/speed. In the free version, only low qualities of these settings will be available—to get all of the features, you'll have to make an in-app purchase.

Exporting Images & Setting as a WallpaperWhile in-app purchase requirements restrict the ability to set your images from Phogy into a live wallpaper, you could always use another application. AnimGIF can turn all of your GIFs into live wallpapers for your device—for free. To do this, you'll need to share and export the picture you took as a GIF directly from Phogy. Now open up AnimGIF, tap on the AnimGIF LWP 2 option, and go into the Settings. In the settings, tap on Select GIF files and find the Phogy folder. In the Phogy folder, select the GIF folder, which will contain all of the GIFs you've created and exported. Once you've selected the GIF you want as a live wallpaper, set it as your background. In the background, you'll see it rotate from left to right and back. At the bottom, there will be a small watermark, but you can get rid of it by purchasing the Pro version of the AnimGIF.

News: iOS 11.3.1 Finally Fixed the QR Code-Scanning Vulnerability in Your iPhone's Camera App

One downside to iOS 11's awesome built-in QR code scanner in the Camera app is its only been live for a short while. In its short life, there has already been a security vulnerability discovered that was an issue for at least the last 4.5 months, but Apple has finally patched this weakness with its iOS 11.3.1 update.Ever since at least iOS 11.2.1, if you were to scan a malicious QR code, the popup that shows up in the Camera app could display the URL for what you think you're about to open in Safari when it really would take you to a different domain altogether, which could possibly be a phishing domain meant to look like the domain it said it was sending you to.Don't Miss: iOS 11.3.1 Released with Display Repair Patch & Security Fixes Images by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks Phishing sounds scary enough to stop you from using the Camera app for QR codes or at least use a third-party QR code scanner instead, but now you don't have to. Apple quietly fixed this problem with the iOS 11.3.1 update on Tuesday, April 24, with little fanfare. In fact, Roman Mueller, the security consultant who first discovered the issue, also discovered that the fix went live, writing on his Twitter:Yep, iOS 11.3.1 fixed the QR parser bug I reported (CVE-2018-4187). Two interesting things: @wester is also credited for it - bug collision? Would be curious [sic] to know when he reported it. — @faker_/TwitterIf you dive into the 11.3.1 security content log, you might not think Apple implemented the fix. However, look under "LinkPresentation," and you can see what Mueller is talking about here:Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted text message may lead to UI spoofingDescription: A spoofing issue existed in the handling of URLs. This issue was addressed with improved input validation.CVE-2018-4187: Zhiyang Zeng (@Wester) of Tencent Security Platform Department, Roman Mueller (@faker_)Regardless of who ultimately alerted Apple to the QR code-scanner vulnerability, the company has now taken the steps to patch it in not only iOS 11.3.1 but also the first and second beta versions for iOS 11.4. How To: Stop Handing Out Your Wi-Fi Password by Enabling "Guest Mode" on Your Chromecast

How To: Stop Handing Out Your Wi-Fi Password by Enabling "Guest Mode" on Your Chromecast
Chromecasts can make for some fun nights. Whether you're setting up a collaborative YouTube watch list, letting everyone add to a giant party playlist, or playing games like Cardcast and Big Web Quiz, Google's streaming media stick is a hit by all accounts. The only bummer of a collective Chromecast night is the fact that in order for your friends and guests to connect, they'll need your Wi-Fi password. For various reasons, whether it's a complicated password, a lack of trust with certain people leeching off your Wi-Fi, or sluggish speeds with so many connections, not everyone is eager to hand out their password. Now you don't have to with Chromecast's latest feature, Guest Mode. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
How Guest Mode WorksWith Guest Mode enabled, the Chromecast sends out a unique Wi-Fi beacon, which is then picked up by a guest's device as they launch a Chromecast-compatible application, like YouTube. Then, when a device attempts to connect, the Chromecast transfers a randomly generated PIN to the guest device using "short, inaudible audio tones." And if that audio tone isn't recognized, guests can always manually input the four-digit code which can be found in the Chromecast owner's Chromecast app.Currently, there is no iOS support for Guest Mode on either the host device or the guest device, and it only works with devices running Android 4.3 or higher right now.

Step 1: Enable "Guest Mode'Before hosting a Chromecast night, enter the Chromecast app on your Android and check the "Guest Mode" box. Once the box is checked, you need to then tap the "OK, turn it on" button on the next screen. With Guest Mode enabled, you can go back one screen in the Chromecast app to view the four-digit PIN it generates.

Step 2: Get Your Guests ConnectedNow, when guests launch an app with Chromecast support, they'll see the cast icon without being on your Wi-Fi network. Simply select the icon and connect by way of listening for the PIN or manually entering it. Now you can stop handing out your Wi-Fi password like breath mints and use Guest Mode! It's easy to set up, and most importantly, no more passwords.
