How To: Find Saved WiFi Passwords in Windows

Once you connect all of your devices to your Wi-Fi router at home, you'll never need that long, complicated Wi-Fi password ever again, right?Unfortunately, life isn't that easy. If you need to reset the network settings on your phone or tablet, or have a friend or family member who needs to check their email real quick, you're going to need to remember that long, complicated password. If you don't have it written down anywhere, there's a way you can find out what it is on your Windows PC, as long as you're still connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot. Just note that this trick only works if you are a local admin on your computer. If not, you'll need to enter the admin username and password.Go to your network adapter settings. (This can be done by accessing Network Connections through the Control Panel, by using the Run menu (pressing Win+R on your keyboard and typing in "ncpa.cpl"), or by simply typing in "ncpa.cpl" in the Start menu.) Once the Network Connections window pops up, find your wireless network, right-click on it, and select "Status" from the menu. In the Wi-Fi Status window, tap on "Wireless Properties." Go to the Security tab, and check the box next to "Show characters." Your password will appear in the text box next to "Network security key." And with the password in-hand, you can give it away to a friend or family member, use it on your other devices, or even just jot it down somewhere so you can quickly access it later without having to go through this process again.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter for more tips!

YouTube 101: Is YouTube Red Worth It?

YouTube 101: Is YouTube Red Worth It?
When Google announced YouTube Red — a paid monthly subscription service that disables advertising, among other perks — many of us thought "just use an ad blocker." But it isn't really that simple.Ad blockers give you an ad-free YouTube experience, but also take revenue away from the creators whose work you enjoy. Without that revenue, much of the content you watch on YouTube wouldn't be there in the first place. Then again, $10/month isn't necessarily cheap, especially with all of the subscriptions we consider paying for these days. So, the question remains: Is YouTube Red actually worth it?Don't Miss: How to Cast YouTube Videos from Your Phone to Your TV
Ad-FreeHere's where morality kicks in. YouTube Red gives users the opportunity to watch any video they like without any form of advertisement. No 30-second, un-skippable ads; no large, unsightly banners on the bottom of the screen. This all without having to use an ad blocker, which, while pleasant for you, is unfair to YouTube creators.Ads are removed from all of YouTube's apps, including YouTube Music, YouTube Gaming, and YouTube Kids. For the cost of a subscription, you can help your favorite creators make a living while continuing to watch distraction-free. Not only that, but several reports indicate that content creators get paid more per view when YouTube Red subscribers watch their videos. But are moral values worth $10 to you? Luckily, ads aren't the only thing you're paying for with YouTube Red.Don't Miss: Follow These 20 YouTube Channels for the Best Videos on the Web

YouTube Red Exclusive ContentIf you aren't into the creators on YouTube Red's list of original content, this feature probably won't appeal to you.To compete with platforms like Netflix and Amazon, YouTube Red provides original content unavailable on its free site. Creators like PewDiePie, Rhett and Link, and Vsauce have produced TV-esque content for the service, while others like Logan Paul, Rooster Teeth, and Lilly Singh created feature films. The exclusive content here is a toss-up. Those who don't follow these creators may or may not like the material. I have only watched Vsauce's show Mind Field, which I do like. But exclusive content, while a significant pull for Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, is not a reason to shell out $10 for YouTube Red.

Offline ViewingLike Spotify, Netflix, and more before it, YouTube now allows you to download content for offline viewing. If you have a limited data plan, or if your commute takes you to places without cell service — I'm looking at you, NYC subway — this feature is indispensable.Personally, I like to fish through my Watch Later playlist and find videos I'd like to watch on my commute. It's an easy way to keep up with my favorite YouTube channels, and makes my commute breeze by. Until the train comes to a screeching-halt, of course. Image by Seinfeld/NBC As with ad-free streaming, offline viewing is available across YouTube's suite of apps.
Background PlayIf you're a multitasker, you know how irritating it can be to start a YouTube video, exit YouTube to, say, respond to a text, only to have your video pause on you. Smartphones feel more and more comparable to a full-PC experience, except when stupid obstacles like this one get in the way.YouTube Red solves this issue by allowing users to keep playing videos even when the YouTube app isn't in the foreground. Whether you leave the app to text, Google, or check Facebook, YouTube will keep playing. If you lock your phone, your YouTube video will continue on.It takes a bit of time to get used to the idea, honestly. I would hit the home button or the lock switch and expect the video to pause, only to be pleasantly surprised to find the opposite. This feature combined with offline playback makes YouTube Red the perfect service for playing music — except the last major YouTube Red perk basically removes the need for that.

YouTube Red Comes with Google Play MusicIf you need a definitive argument for YouTube Red's worth, here it is — Google Play Music is bundled into a YouTube Red subscription. Not only can you stream and download YouTube videos, but you can also stream and download any song in the Google Play Music library. While other streaming services like Spotify may be more popular, it's tough to argue about the value here — $10/month for one music streaming platform, or $10/month for music and all of the above YouTube Red features. To each their own, but personally, I see the Google Music/YouTube Red combo as the better bargain. But it gets better. Google offers a family pricing plan for its music streaming service, so you can have up to six people on one plan for $14.99/month. That comes out to about $2.50/month per person if you split the bill six ways. And, yes, it comes with YouTube Red.Do you know five people who would enjoy Google Play Music and YouTube Red for $2.50/month? If you don't, find some, because this is an excellent deal.
The VerdictSo, is YouTube Red worth it? In the opinion of this video consumer, absolutely. Guiltless ad-free streaming, offline playback, and Google Play Music combine to make $10/month easier to swallow. Not to mention, finding five other users to share one account almost feels like stealing. In short, YouTube Red is a no-brainer for some. If your wallet forces you to decide between it and other services like Netflix or HBO Now, your choice comes down to your own situation. Does the content on those platforms intrigue you more than downloadable YouTube, or Google Play Music service? I can't help you there. What I can say is YouTube Red is perfect for people like me who want to consume as many internet videos as possible, whenever, wherever. I give YouTube Red a high recommendation.Don't Miss: How to Manage Your YouTube NotificationsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

YouTube Phreaking: How to Extract a Phone Number from a YouTube Clip

Every key on a telephone keypad has its own sonic signature, a sort of calling card composed of two distinct tones: one high, one low. While it's easy to tell the difference between the individual pitches in a single row—see, for example, this article on using your cell phone as a musical instrument—, it's often difficult to differentiate between notes within the same column. Unless, of course, you outsource the work to a computer! Which is what Uruguayan hacker [Charlie X-Ray] recently set out to do. With a little help from Python and Audacity, Charlie came up with a method of extracting phone numbers from video clips featuring audible key presses. The results output to a neat, easy-to-read spectrogram. Moral of the story? Don't let the camera hear you dial if you want to keep a number private! Interested in trying it out yourself? You'll find complete details on Charlie's website (Google translation).

News: 2 Exciting New Features Coming in Apple's Clips App for iOS

News: 2 Exciting New Features Coming in Apple's Clips App for iOS

Apple has yet to create a successful social networking app, but that doesn't mean they want to be left out of the social video conversation. Case in point: Today they announced a new video app set to debut for iOS in April called Clips.Clips is separate from the core Camera app on an iPhone or iPad, but it isn't quite a social networking app either. It's somewhere in between the two. Ostensibly, the purpose of the app is to shoot and edit photos and videos that can then be uploaded to social sharing apps.As seen below, the capture screen on the app is square (like Instagram's), and at the top of the app resides four different features: Live Titles, Filters, Overlays, and Posters. Each video you shoot or image you add is a clip, which can be up to 30 minutes long. They can then be strung together with other clips, for a maximum video length of 60 minutes. Images via Apple You can then upload these clips to any social media app you prefer, including Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Tumblr, though there are a few extras built into iMessage if you share there, including automatically detecting and suggesting you share with the iMessage users in the clip.Don't Miss: Activate Your iPhone's Hidden Magnifying Glass in iOS 10Lauren Goode of The Verge got a chance to play around with Clips and reported back on the good, the bad, and the meh. Mainly, it's a mishmosh of different parts of Snapchat, Instagram, Vine, Prisma, iMovie, and Qwiki, with features like "adding filters, basic text, contextual elements like location or time of day, emoji, and iTunes music tracks," Goode notes. Image via Apple There are also cool and unique features that solve problems social networkers didn't even know they had.
Live TitlesLive Titles eliminates having to type out any text overlay: Simply record your voice and the app translates it into text in the font of your choosing. This both speeds up the captioning process for clips and allows for a cool "rolling captioning" over your Clips videos.Oddly, Goode noted, the feature is unintuitive and, unfortunately, it removes the ability to scribble over your face or add text to an image or video with your finger, the way you can in Snapchat. Boo.
PostersThe posters feature will be useful, as Goode says it allows you to create "full-screen, text-based graphics," and slot them into your clip. This is an easy way to have both a title and end card, or to place transitions in between clips the way you might add a transition or explanatory snap image to your story. Traditionally, some sort of editing software would be needed to create these transitions, but with Clips, it can all be done quickly in the palm of your hand.Another appealing and unique characteristic Clips provides? Privacy. The content is stored directly on your phone and is not sent out to a million people directly through the app and stored in the app's cloud (I'm looking at you, Snapchat), so it offers a modicum of more safety that users might be desperate for in today's society.Don't Miss: iOS 10 Lets You Edit, Crop & Add Filters to Live Photos on Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Get That Stock Android Feel on Samsung, LG & Other Phones Without Rooting

How To: Get That Stock Android Feel on Samsung, LG & Other Phones Without Rooting
Recently, many manufacturers have started offering phones with a clean, stock Android UI. Motorola, Essential, Nokia, and OnePlus are probably the biggest names that have listened to user feedback and shifted more towards AOSP. But if your phone still has a bloated OEM skin, there are a few things you can do about it.In particular, Samsung, LG, Huawei, and Xiaomi use their own custom flavors of Android that are all on the heavy side. The additions they make can lead to a bloatware problem while drastically reducing performance and battery life — all in the name of differentiating themselves from competitors. While many have turned to root and custom ROMs to remove these OEM skins, that's not an option for everyone. So the tips I'll outline below don't require root, but they will give you that snappy and clean stock Android look while even boosting performance a bit. While they're not a perfect solution, they do address the major concerns so that when applied, your OEM skin will become much more bearable.Don't Miss: Why Samsung & Other OEMs Need to Stop Messing with Android

Tip #1: Remove Bloatware with ADB CommandsIf you're like many Americans, you walk into your local carrier store and purchase a phone. When you return home, you turn it on, add your Google account, and transfer the apps from your last device. After a period of time, your device completes the setup process and you head to the app drawer — only to be greeted by dozens of extra apps you didn't personally install. Many OEM skins include apps such as Calendar and Messages that duplicate the functionality of the Google apps that come baked into Android. There are also apps from your carrier such as "My T-Mobile" and "Visual Voicemail." When you try to uninstall them, you then learn the sad truth that because they are system apps, this can't be done. At best, you can maybe disable these "bloatware" apps — however, there is a better solution. Some of the bloatware that comes pre-installed on LG devices. Using ADB commands, you can partially uninstall any bloatware app. When executed, the app won't show up in your app drawer, it won't take up storage space, and it won't run in the background. However, if you ever factory reset your device, they will return, as they are part of the original software. So while not a perfect solution, this is still vastly better than just dealing with it.So to finally remove all your phone's bloatware, follow the step-by-by guide at the link below. While the article focuses on a T-Mobile LG V30, the steps are applicable to any phone. The only difference is Step 2, where you would need to use this link to find your drivers instead. With this one modification, your phone will feel much cleaner and a lot closer to stock.Don't Miss: How to Remove Bloatware from Any Android Device Without Root Access

Tip #2: Replace the Default Home ScreenOne of the more noticeable aspects of non-stock devices is the home screen launcher. Typically, this is a common modification by OEMs with varying degrees of success. While replacing it is easy, the decision on what to replace it with can be difficult.Nova Launcher provides a stock-like launcher but with much more customization. With Nova, all the home screen features on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL are available. In addition, you'll have access to an abundance of tweaks to truly personalize your home screen to your liking. If you're new to Nova, check out our collection of Nova Launcher 101 guides which break down how to use some of Nova Launcher's bigger features. Another option is Action Launcher. Similar to Nova, this provides a near-stock experience but with a few tweaks here and there. While Nova is more feature-rich than Action, the latter does offer a few unique additions that aren't available with other third-party launchers nor Android's stock launcher. You can learn more about these features here. Finally, there is Lawnchair Launcher, which is a more barebones option. With Lawnchair, you get all the features and tools available to the default Pixel 2 launcher, plus a few customization options. It doesn't have anywhere near the tools of Nova or Action, but it's also faster to get up and running since there is less to set up. While the choice will be a little difficult (I did warn you), any one of these options will be a significant upgrade over OEM launchers while providing a stock Android experience.

Tip #3: Get Stock Android's Notification ShadePersonally, I think one of the most annoying changes that OEMs make is their modifications to the notification shade. Whether it's something small like changing the size of notification text, or major changes such as using different background colors for Quick Settings, OEM skins can completely ruin one of the most central menus in Android. It was one particular OEM skin that drove me to find a solution, and what I came across is something that even stock Android users should use.Material Notification Shade will return your Quick Settings to the stock look automatically. Whether you want Android Oreo's look, or prefer Android Nougat's previous look, you can easily change your notification shade to your liking. However, unlike stock Android, Material Notification Shade includes customization options. You can enable a permanent dark theme for AMOLED devices, use a custom wallpaper as your background, change the color of enabled toggles, and more. There are quite a bit of options available to create your preferred look. However, the app isn't without its limitations — Material Notification Shade doesn't support Android Oreo. Additionally, EMUI (Huawei and Honor's skin) doesn't work well with the app, often preventing it from enabling. However, for all other skins, this is app provides a complete solution. We are aware that these tips don't address all aspects of stock Android. For example, the Settings menu isn't addressed, and that's a solution I am still searching for. But we'll keep searching for more tips like these and update this guide as we find them, so check back for additional tips. However, with these three tips, your phone should now look and operate a lot more like stock Android, appeasing many Android purists. What do you think about these tips? Do you know of any similar tips that don't require root? Let us know in the comments below.Don't Miss :How to Use Material Notification Shade to Get Stock Android's Quick Settings Panel & MoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Simplify Your Android's UI for Less Distracted Driving

How To: Simplify Your Android's UI for Less Distracted Driving
Most new Android devices come with at least one feature that helps control navigation, music, and more through voice-controlled, hands-free communication. While they usually don't end up being completely "hands-free," these apps do stop people from using both hands to perform tasks on their smartphones while driving, therefore distracting them less overall. And that brings me to the hands-free driving app that exists on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Thanks to my cellular provider, I don't have Samsung's Car Mode app, so I'm stuck with AT&T's DriveMode, which doesn't have many features and comes with a rather clumsy UI.Google's Car Home is a great alternative, except for one thing—it only only works on some devices, and my Note 4 didn't make the cut. While currently in beta, Drivemode, from Drivemode, Inc., provides a great alternative to the stock driving app. With Drivemode, I can check directions, control my music with simple gestures, and check my text messages and phone calls—all through a single intuitive interface. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Setting Up DrivemodeWhen you initially open Drivemode, you'll be asked to enter a few locations that you frequently visit: home, work, and one more. After that's finished you'll be sent to the main page, where you can choose a main app for directions and music (streaming or otherwise).Under directions, you'll see the three locations you entered earlier as options to pick for a destination when using Drivemode. Under the Communication header, you can choose to accept or decline as well as ignore or forward text messages and phone calls.

Accessing Drivemode's Driving OptionsHit "Start Driving" to send Drivemode into action. You'll be transported to your app of choice, which I chose to be Google Maps. On the left side of the screen you'll see a semi-transparent drawer, which you can slide out. In this menu, you can easily scroll around to send a message, make a phone call, change your music, open another app, and turn off Drivemode.

Sending Messages & Calls in DrivemodeIn Message, you'll have the option to send an audio message as well as several preset text messages. Learning from where you go and who you contact, Drivemode will suggest locations and contacts when you need directions or want to call someone. When you receive a phone call and answer it, the menu will become transparent so that you can keep your eyes on your directions at the same time.

Playing Music in DrivemodeAccess music controls by either tapping-and-holding on the menu or going to Music in the menu. From anywhere on the screen, you can swipe left and right to switch between songs, swipe up and down to change the volume, and tap on the screen to play and pause. Music controls will appear only while you touch the screen and become transparent when you're not.

Setting Up Additional Configurations in DrivemodeDrivemode also has many settings that you can configure by selecting "Settings" from the three-dash menu at the top left. From this menu, you can enable launching the app automatically when it detects you're driving, add preset messages, and add a built-in Spotify player. If you use a rotating car-mount, you can use Drivemode in landscape mode as well. Also, if you know where you're headed and aren't using directions, you can swap out the main app for anything else, such as Chrome, and the semi-transparent drawer will still appear on the side. Thanks to its easy to use interface, good-looking design, and loads of features (night mode, driving detection, and more), Drivemode by far surpasses the stock option that I have. How well does it work for you?Follow Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter for more Android news, apps, and tips.

How To: Increase Security on Your iPhone's Lock Screen

How To: Increase Security on Your iPhone's Lock Screen
With over 10,000 possible combinations, a four-digit passcode may seem secure, but it's fairly easy for someone to crack your code—no matter how clever you think it is. Luckily, there are many other options for securing your iPhone's lock screen—especially if your running iOS 9.Don't Miss: Hide Apps & Folders on Your iPhone Without Jailbreaking
Step 1: Beef Up Your PasscodeEven with Touch ID security in place, you're still required to have a passcode in case the fingerprint scanner is unresponsive or your fingers are too sweaty to read. In iOS 8 and older versions, a four-digit passcode was standard, and chances are you still have one on your iOS 9 device if you transferred all of your settings over.

Option #1: Use a Six-Digit PasscodeThis feature was first introduced in iOS 9, and provides up to 1,000,000 possibilities (which is a lot better than 10,000). If you set up your iOS 9 device from scratch, chances are it wanted you to use a six-digit one anyway, though you could have opted for the simple four-digit one instead.Navigate to Settings -> Touch ID & Passcode, then after entering your current passcode to unlock the preferences, select Change Passcode. You'll need to enter your current passcode in again, then tap on Passcode Options and select 6-Digit Numeric Code.
Option #2: Use an Any-Digit PasscodeIf four or six digits isn't enough protection for your lock screen, there are a few more options for you. By selecting Custom Numeric Code (iOS 9 only), you can create a numbers-only passcode of any length, which can be crazy difficult to crack (unless, of course, you record a video of it).

Option #3: Use an Alphanumeric Code (Or Complex Passcode)If you'd rather have a password, you can select Custom Alphanumeric Code (in iOS 8, you would un-toggle "Simple Passcode" to create a "Complex Passcode") to make your lock screen even more secure. Alphanumeric codes can be any length, and can include letters, numbers, and/or special characters. With a combination of various types of characters, it'll be a lot more difficult to crack than a four-digit, six-digit, or any-digit passcode.

Step 2: Disable Lock Screen FeaturesAs useful as Siri can be, she's somewhat of a liability when accessible from the lock screen, which was made obvious through an iOS 9 exploit. Luckily, all you have to do is deny lock screen access. In addition to Siri, other sensitive content should be disabled. To adjust what's accessible from your iPhone's lock screen, head into the "Allow Access When Locked" section in your Touch ID & Passcode preferences. From here, you can disable (un-toggle) Today, Notifications View, Siri, Reply with Messages, and Wallet. Siri aside, I'm more concerned with a stranger picking up my iPhone and replying to a text with something potentially horrible. And unless you're using Touch ID with Wallet, anyone with your passcode can use Apple Pay. As a precaution, and because unlocking my phone only takes a few seconds, I toggle everything off.

Step 3: Disable the Control CenterWhen you lose your iPhone, Find My iPhone is there to help track it down. That is unless the person who found it pulls up the Control Center to toggle on Airplane Mode, essentially taking your device off the grid, making it impossible to track or wipe all of its content. The best way to prevent this from happening is by heading to the Control Center preferences within your iPhone's settings and toggling off "Access on Lock Screen." Although your iPhone can be turned off as a preventive measure, the person who has it won't be getting much use out of it without having the location tracked.

Step 4: Make Your iPhone Lock SoonerAlthough it's annoying that my iPhone will automatically lock itself within a short period of time when not actively in use, this precaution can prevent potential scumbags from picking it up and using it right away without needing a passcode or Touch ID. This can be a problem with "snatch-and-run" scenarios, in which your iPhone is literally taken from your hands as you use it, when it's most-likely unlocked. To get your iPhone to lock faster, you'll need to adjust the Auto-Lock setting and Require Passcode preference.Change the Auto-Lock timer by heading into Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock. From there, I'd suggest using the shortest time available: 30 Seconds. While it's ultimately up to you, the less time there is, the smaller the window of opportunity is for anyone who steals your device. While Auto-Lock will power down the display, it won't lock your iPhone right away (unless Touch ID is enabled). To make your device lock as soon as the display dims, head into the Passcode & Touch ID settings and select the Require Passcode option. As stated within the preferences itself, "Shorter times are more secure."

Step 5: Hide Notification Content or Remove It CompletelyEmails and texts received are previewed on the lock screen, sometimes containing content we don't want visible to wondering eyes. So unless it's vital that you see notification previews on the lock screen, hide or remove them completely. To adjust the notification preferences of any particular application, go to Settings -> Notifications and select the app whose notification content you wish to change. You can select to disable notifications on the lock screen or just disable previews (this will disable previews when the device is unlocked as well). From now on, whether someone is trying to look over your shoulder or steal your iPhone, you'll have safeguards in place that won't make it as easy to use. If you have other safety tips you'd like to recommend, drop a comment down below.

How To: Set & Trigger Location-Based Reminders on Your iPhone

How To: Set & Trigger Location-Based Reminders on Your iPhone
I'll be the first to admit how horrible my memory is, whether it's remembering to take out the garbage or paying a bill on time. That's why I regularly utilize the stock Reminders app on my iPhone; it's definitely compensated for my memory deficiencies. However, setting a specific time for a reminder isn't necessarily the best option. If traffic is heavy or I decide to grab a drink after work, that 6pm reminder to grab dog food is likely going to be dismissed and forgotten. The simple solution is to set a reminder that's triggered once I actually leave or reach a specific location. For example, entering my home address and labeling the reminder "return Redbox movie." I'll get the reminder when I actually need it, and no more late movies. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Add a New ReminderOpen your Reminders app up, then tap on a blank line to enter a new reminder. Afterward, tap the circled information icon to the right to edit the reminder.

Step 2: Set a Location for the ReminderOnce in edit mode, enable Remind me at a location and tap Location directly underneath it to input your desired location. You can enter an address or use Current Location. Also, note that Location Services must be enabled with these reminders, but you'll receive a popup to enable that setting if it's not already active.

Step 3: Pick "Leave" or "Arrive"After setting a location, you'll have the option of being reminded when you arrive or leave the address you entered. The When I leave... option comes in handy for things like remembering to turn of the lights or pick up dog food once you've left your house. You can also pull out the circumference of the circle on the map to expand the perimeter of your location area.

Step 4: Save the Location-Based ReminderWhen you're finished setting up the reminder, tap on Details to go back, then select Done to finalize it. Users running anything lower than iOS 7.1 have complained that location-based reminders don't function properly if the Reminders app isn't running in the background, so make sure not to kill the app if you have iOS 7.0.6 or lower. With this simple tip, you can now get the reminders you want, when they matter most. With reminders triggered by location, you can afford to let things slip your mind and make room for the important things in life. iOS has your back.

How To: Prevent the Screen on Your Nexus 7 from Shutting Down on You While You Read

How To: Prevent the Screen on Your Nexus 7 from Shutting Down on You While You Read

For being an inexpensive tablet, the Nexus 7 packs a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution into a relatively small display, offering a very sharp-looking 216 pixels per inch. What does that mean? It's one of the best e-readers on the market. An often overlooked feature that's embedded in most of the apps on your Nexus 7 (and nearly every other smartphone and tablet device on the market) is the ability to keep your screen/display on while the apps are in use. That's the reason your screen never turns off while you watch a video or play a game. While this feature may seem universal, it doesn't pertain to every single app on your Nexus 7. If you're reading a long article or essay through Facebook, Google+, your web browser, or other apps, your screen will turn black after a few seconds, especially if the settings on your device are programmed that way. Sure, you can make your device's screen from timing out, but that would counteract negatively with the reason you had the short time out in the first place—to save battery. So how can you keep your screen on while you read on your device?By using the free Keep Screen ON app. It allows you to keep your Nexus 7 tablet's screen on in an intelligent way; the screen will only stay on if you are holding the device up, using the built-in orientation sensor in your device. Images via ggpht.com When you use your Nexus 7, you hold it in a specific position. Not only does the screen stay on while you hold it, it also allows you to select the range of activation of the screen brightness, based on the way your device is inclined. With these features, you don't have to sacrifice any battery life—as soon as you set your device down, the screen will turn off.If the free version of the application doesn't do it for you, you can check out Keep Screen ON Pro, which will run you a little over a buck. The paid version comes with additional features, such as the ability to disable when charging, disable when near proximity sensor, and display Timeout Tab.

How To: Apple Watch Vulnerability Lets Thieves Use Apple Pay Without Your PIN

How To: Apple Watch Vulnerability Lets Thieves Use Apple Pay Without Your PIN
No, your Apple Watch isn't totally hacker-proof, despite what some have claimed. The basic idea behind its security is that the Watch can detect when it is removed from a wrist, and automatically requires a passcode to be entered if removed (if one is set up, which is a requirement for using Apple Pay). So we set out to trick the sensor into thinking it's still on a wrist while removing it. Taking that a step further, we wanted to see if we could use this "exploit" to bring up Apple Pay and make purchases with someone else's card. We'll cut right to the chase—we got it to work without much effort. Here's how we did it, and what you can do to protect yourself if someone uses this technique on you.
How the Apple Watch Sensors Keep It UnlockedOn the back of the Apple Watch are four specifically designed rings which contain the 4 components of the heart rate sensor—2 green/infrared LEDs and 2 photodiode sensors. While measuring your heart rate, this sensor can tell if the watch is currently being worn. That way, if your Apple Watch is passcode-protected, you won't have to enter your passcode in every single time you want to use it (as long as it doesn't leave your wrist).Try it out yourself. When your passcode-protected Apple Watch is on your wrist, you don't need to enter your passcode every time you want to use it. Now take the Apple Watch off your wrist. After a second, it'll lock and prompt you to enter your passcode in order to gain access to it again.
The VulnerabilityWhile the wrist-detection is a useful feature, did you catch the part where I mentioned that there is a one-second delay before the Apple Watch locks itself? That one-second delay, before the Apple Watch activates its passcode-protection, cannot be patched. It's necessary to prevent the Watch from constantly re-locking itself during the split-second separations from your skin that occurs during regular use. After all, it would be pretty annoying if running, shaking your wrist, or rotating the Watch for comfort caused it to lock itself. But here's the catch: The Watch can't tell the difference between a wrist and a finger.Knowing that, we managed to use that one-second delay to exploit the sensor by simply touching the back of the Watch while taking it off someone's wrist. The watch remained unlocked while we held the back. In fact, it was easy enough to swap the Apple Watch from one wrist to another—all without the device locking. While we're not great at swiping wristwatches, there are several people who are.
What this means is simple: someone could potentially steal your Watch by simply grasping it by the back to gain access to the information stored on it. And since many people have no doubt put their credit cards on their Apple Watch, yes, this includes Apple Pay. The exploit is even easier with the pricier Leather Loop and Milanese Loop magnetic bands as they slip loose with minimal effort.

How to Take Off the Apple Watch Without Triggering the PasscodeTo test it out, we had Neil Gonzalez sync his iPhone with the Apple Watch, add a lock screen passcode, and set up his credit card for use with Apple Pay (we used a credit card because they don't require entering a PIN into the payment terminal like a debit-only card would). We started with Neil wearing the Apple Watch on his wrist, which didn't require him to enter his passcode. My goal here is to remove the Watch from his wrist and transfer it to mine while keeping it unlocked. I took the Apple Watch off his wrist with two hands, then quickly slid two fingers underneath the Watch case where the heart rate sensor is located, to maintain skin contact. Of course, all this had to be done within a second, before the Watch locked me out. Then I quickly placed the Apple Watch on my wrist, secured it, and voilà! I was able to access everything on his Apple Watch without having to enter a passcode, including his credit card which was "secured" through Apple Pay. For good measure, we even turned off Neil's iPhone, which disables pretty much everything on the Apple Watch—except for Apple Pay. But just to make sure we weren't missing some back-up security feature, we headed to Walgreens to put this exploit into action. With the Apple Watch on my wrist, I was able to bring up Apple Pay and make a purchase with Neil's credit card without any trouble. Yea, this was much easier than I thought (and would've hoped).
How to Protect Yourself from Watch ThievesObviously this method of stealing an Apple Watch, all while maintaining skin contact underneath it and running away, is highly unlikely unless you're hanging out with magicians, pickpockets, or commute on crowded trains. Still, it's definitely something to be aware of and protect yourself from.Set a Passcode While we did show how to exploit a passcode-protected Apple Watch, we still recommend you set one. Without a passcode, it's a guarantee that if your Watch is stolen, the thief will be able to access all of the information on it, including Apple Pay. Also, thieves can wipe your Apple Watch and restore it as their own, so make sure to set a passcode—and not one of those generic 1234 ones.Remove Apple Pay If your Apple Watch gets misplaced, the first thing you should do is remove your credit cards from Apple Pay directly from the Apple Watch application on your iPhone. That way, if someone has it, they at least won't be able to use your credit card to make purchases.Unfortunately for this method to work, the Apple Watch will have to be in range of your iPhone. Otherwise, you'll have to log into your iCloud account online, go to Settings -> My Devices, choose your Watch, then click on "Remove All" to wipe the slate clean. Your cards will still be visible on the Watch, but only the last 4 digits of the number. No other portion of that number is saved on the Watch, and each card is associated with a device-specific ID that Apple deactivates on their server.
A Few More Things to NoteWe played with this exploit for hours, trying to see other ways in which we could lift the Apple Watch without triggering the passcode. If you're really careful, you can actually unhinge the band and slowly lift the Apple Watch up, because it seems that the accelerometer also plays a part in locking the display. If you do it slowly enough while the Watch's display is active, you can keep it unlocked and place it on your wrist, but it didn't work consistently well enough for us to state it as anything more than an off-occurrence.We also noticed that sometimes the Apple Watch would stay completely unlocked, even after removing my fingers from the sensor. While this didn't happen every single time, it did happen twice, and you can check out more about that over at MacRumors.
Final ThoughtsAside from this "fingergate" exploit, the Apple Watch is actually a pretty secure device. It doesn't store too much information, and even then, it's difficult to access any of it if the iPhone that's paired to it is out of range or turned off—except of course for Apple Pay!This article serves more as a warning to show you what thieves could potentially do when stealing your Apple Watch. It's difficult to see this method working for everyday thieves, but it could be used against someone who's drunk and unaware, out at a bar or a club, or otherwise unconscious.I can't count how many times I've had someone try to lift my iPhone or wallet from me when out at a noisy and crowded bar, so what's going to stop them from trying it on my Watch? All it takes is someone to get a little too drunk, and out of the darkness comes a thief who can easily remove your Apple Watch, keep their fingers underneath the sensor, and use your credit card to buy everyone a drink at the bar.Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple news, apps, and tips.

Yes it's good that a thief can't get into your watch and use Apple Pay to make purchases. But, having the ability to fully reset and use your watch as their own is a huge problem, and should be rectified. I'm honestly surprised that Apple hadn't thought of this and fixed it somehow.
